Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCL) adult stem cell treatment

Adult stem cell treatment is not a cure for NCL, but can provide an important stepping stone towards less symptoms.

Stem cells can improve speech, motor skills and help with better swallowing and breathing capabilities.

Stem cell therapy remains one of the only ways to successfully treat children suffering from Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL, Batten disease, late infantile NCL). In Beijing, China neurologists have treated many children from all over the world who suffer from this rare and devastating condition. In most of those cases, the treatments have resulted in increased strength, improved communication and a halt in the progression of the disease. Contact us today for a free consultation

Data shows efficacy of stem cell therapy for NCL

NCL (or Batten disease, late infantile NCL) is very rare and there are only one or two medical institutions worldwide that have any substantial experience with the condition. Vigendo's partner hospitals have treated children suffering from NCL since 2007 and while the stage at which the child is treated has an influence on the result, many children will see some improvement in their condition.

Delivery methods and stem cell types

IV drip and lumbar puncture are the methods used when delivering stem cells to children with Batten disease/NCL. They can be used individually or in combination, which safely and effectively enable the stem cells to reach the site of injury, allowing nerve regeneration where it's needed.

In treatments for Batten disease/childhood NCL the following types of cells are used:

  • Umbilical cord stem cells
  • Neural stem cells

All stem cells are processed, tested and cultured before implantation. The delivery method and type of stem cell ultimately used for your child's treatment will be determined by the medical team and depends on his or her individual condition.

Side effects and risks

As with all medical procedures, your child may experience some side effects following implantation, the most common are: dizziness, nausea, headaches or a slight fever. These side effects do not pose any threat to the overall success of the treatment. Stem cell treatment can increase epileptic activity for patients who suffer from seizures, it is therefore important that a proper evaluation is conducted before arrival so that adequate measures can be taken during and immediately after treatment.

Independent research shows that rejection reactions, tumors or other stronger side effects of stem cell implantation are highly unlikely. Stem cells have, in fact, been shown to reduce rejection reactions in for example organ transplants. Adult stem cells have been used in mainstream medical treatment for almost 4 decades.
